Dr. Maren Böse is a senior research scientist in the SED (Swiss Seismological Service) and SEG (Seismology and Geodynamics) groups at ETH Zurich. She has been working on various aspects of (real-time) seismology and earthquake monitoring. Her research focuses mainly on innovative ideas and methodologies for rapid seismic event detection, source characterization (including finite-fault ruptures), as well as ground-motion simulation and prediction. She is one of the leading scientists, who helped developing and testing the Californian ShakeAlert warning system (www.shakealert.org), that provides real-time alerts to several hundreds of test users, and might become the platform for future system development of public and automated earthquake early warning in the United States.

Other of her work focuses on

  • probabilistic relationships between fault maturity, slip and rupture length
  • joint Bayesian inversion of seismic and high-rate GPS real-time data for distributed slip models and stable magnitude estimates in large earthquakes
  • usage of low-cost sensor data from smartphones for earthquake/tsunami early warning and rapid response in Chile
  • probabilistic single-station location and inversion for structure for the 2018 NASA InSight mission to Mars
  • automated detection and characterization of induced seismicity
  • seismicity and seismic monitoring in Switzerland
