I have specific interests in observational seismology. As a STEK (Seismotectonic) group member in SED, I focus on the seismotectonics of the central Alps - using seismology as a tool to better understand the structure and the complex tectonic settings at this orogenic belt.

The motivation of the project is quite simple; we found earthquake sequences in the Valais. These may imply the existence of the seismically active structures or geological weak zone. Questions regard to its potential earthquake hazards thus become important. Our goal is to utilise the data from SED network, which continuously improving their station coverage, signal quality, and updating seismographs, to get hypocenter locations and 1D velocity model in high precision as a coupled hypocenter-velocity problem. The better the 1D model and hypocenter were solved, the better the final 3D velocity model could yield. We would then seek if there is any connection between seismology and the geology and its implications.

Though the SED network is good enough, we keep searching for potential sites to make the station coverage of the sequence even better. Surrounded by cows, small animals, mountains, and local specialty beer make field works in the Valais extremely relaxed. Sometimes even think of it is not a seismic-station installation work, but a casual outdoor excursion;)
