More Earthquakes, More Energy Released

Magnitude is a measure of the energy released by an earthquake. Each increase in the unit of magnitude is equivalent to a 30-fold increase in energy. As a result, the energy of the Tohoku earthquake (magnitude of 9.0) is around 1,000 times that of the Haiti earthquake (magnitude of 7.1).
