Below is the old part of this web-page. Almost all of the problems
mentioned below are solved now by following the instructions given above.
However: Listening to 'Echo der Zeit' on http://echo.drs.ch is still not
possible - not even with the latest RealPlayer downloaded from real.com -
any suggestion from anybody?? Would be much appreciated!
- We did both: update and new install, with the same effects... - Our NVIDIA did not work properly after the new install, until we had changed 'nv' in the file /etc/X11/XF86Config to 'nvidia'. - mplayer showed video, but there was no sound, if a DVD movie was entered into the DVD drive. - Also: 'xine' did not work for playing a movie from DVD (video, no sound). - The icons/symbols on the desktop with partitions on the disk were not displayed appropriately after a new login / a new session - instead, they were messed up on the desktop. - Konqueror was still not able to play sound on the web-page http://echo.drs.ch (Click on 'hoeren') - neither was the new Mozilla software... We got the message, that no realplayer was installed, although this wasn't the case. - KDE control center (KDE 3.1.1) did not look nicely: one cannot expand the menu items - instead, you choose an item and then always have to go back to the previous item, before being able to choose a new item. - Well, there are also advantages: SuSEwatcher is a nice thing and it is also nice that after a new login the 'Konsole' starts in the directory where you left it. - Another advantage in SuSE 8.2 is, that the Online-Update seems to be much faster compared to 8.1: Quickly we got the list of updates! - And: xcdroast comes with its new version alpha13 together with SuSE 8.2 . - But where is the nice VMware-icon? It is not available anymore for a link on the desktop.
All in all, we did the following: Starting a rescue system and with this we entered
cp /dev/hdb /dev/hda and then we had saved SuSE Linux 8.1 back for our
productive work.
It seems, that SuSE 8.2 is not yet suitable for production machines...
We therefore wait until more patches are available...
