Dr. Stefan Wiemer is ad interim Director of the SED.

His expertise and research interest include probabilistic seismic hazard assessment, time dependent hazard assessment, testing of forecast models, statistical seismology and volcano-seismology. He has authored or co-authored more than 45 publications in international journals and supervised 5 PhD students and 7 master students at ETH. He was responsible for the computation of the 2004 SED seismic hazard maps and will be heavily involved in the creation of the new hazard maps. He and his students have produced the first time-dependent hazard maps for California, updated every hour and published on the Internet http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/step/. He and his group are involved in a series of projects on national and international level, including the Regional Earthquake Likelihood (RELM) modelling initiative of the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) and the related testing of earthquake forecast models and the EU funded FP6 project NERIES.
