Special Seismic Networks

The Special Seismic Networks group at the Swiss Seismological Service is involved in seismic monitoring efforts related to large-scale construction projects (such as the Gotthard basetunnel) or to deep geothermal projects. Such projects possess the possibility of inducing small earthquakes due to local stress perturbations. Hence, installing and operating small-scale seismic networks is often the first step towards a seismic hazard and risk study for these projects. Special Seismic Networks will install such networks in collaboration with private or public industries, that run these kinds of projects. Data acquired by these networks will allow to compute more precise earthquake locations and, hence, may give insights in the processes leading to the observed seismicity. Moreover, real-time monitoring of possible induced earthquakes will allow for a timely reactions if an increase in seismicity or unusual earthquakes are detected.

Currently, Special Seismic Networks is involved in three projects to monitor induced earthquakes. Information on these projects, as well as on past projects, can be found under the menu Projects.

Please do not hesitate to contact us in case you have questions related to seismic monitoring or to specific projects.
