SalanderMaps

The method Salander (Seismic activity linked to area codes - nimble detection of earthquake rumbles) is the newest product of the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at the ETH Zurich.

The project Salander deals with monitoring and analyzing the geographical origin of accesses to the web-servers of the SED using data mining techniques.
A SalanderMap depicts the areas from where accesses to our web-servers were made. The geographical area of the visitors of our web-servers is determined using a data base, which has been established during several months in 2010. It links the IP-address (IP-number) of our visitor's computers to their geographical region. This method allows us to unprecedentedly quickly assess the areas in Switzerland, where an earthquake has been felt. In many cases this information is faster than our alert system based on instrumental data and it is always faster than the feedback received by the public via our online-form.
