Data protection

We use the web analysis software ‘Matomo’ for anonymous statistical analysis of the use of our website.

Web analysis

We collect the following data using Matomo: IP address (anonymised), user ID (anonymised), pages visited, length of stay, referral source, browser type and downloaded files.

We anonymise your IP address before processing, so no conclusions can be drawn about your identity. No identifiable IP addresses are stored or processed further. User data is automatically deleted after 180 days.

Cookies

We use cookies on our website. These are small text files that are stored on your computer for a defined period of time when you visit www.seismo.ethz.ch. These cookies help us to statistically evaluate the use of our website and to continuously improve it.

We use Matomo for this purpose. This is an analytics service that we host on our own server in Switzerland. We have configured the service so that the IP addresses of visitors are anonymised (the last byte is masked). You can disable cookies in your browser settings at any time, either completely or partially, or delete them manually.

Logs

We save certain metadata about your user behaviour in log files for troubleshooting purposes and to trace abuse of our web presence. This data includes the IP address, date, time, browser request and information transmitted about the device used, including the operating system and browser. We do not use log files to analyse your user behaviour or associate it with other collected data.

Earthquake reports

We collect earthquake reports through the 'Report an Earthquake?' form. All the information provided is stored on our own servers and used for scientific research. No data is shared with third parties.
