In the ATTAC project (2016-2024) in Central America, the Real-time Seismology group created an EEW cell phone application that allows agencies operating EEW to directly deliver alerts (Massin et al., 2024). Messages to the app are directly triggered by the ESE software and alerts for either VS, FinDer, or both may be delivered. Messages are shared using Google's free Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) service, which provides delays on the order of 2-5s for most users. A separate app was developed for Android and iOS. Currently, magnitude and location are sent to the app, which then provides warnings that depend on the user's location and the estimated shaking, with multiple alert levels. The delay is tracked for each message, and the user can report felt intensities following EMS-98 using EMSC pictograms (Bossu et al., 2017). In the summer of 2024, this mobile application was providing EEW to around 100,000 recipients in each of Costa Rica and Guatemala.
