Remo Grolimund has a degree in history and is principally involved in the historico-critical refinement of the Earthquake Catalogue of Switzerland in an interdisciplinary project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF). Besides his research in historical seismology he is working on the macroseismic analysis of contemporary earthquakes in Switzerland and other interdisciplinary projects.

In addition to the reconstruction of seismic patterns and macroseismic fields from historical documents, he has a strong interest in putting historical earthquake information into their context of production. This key factor for an accurate interpretation of historical data involves a broad variety of aspects (history of science, technology and knowledge, cultural history, discourse analysis, political aspects, etc).

His current research mainly focuses on the period from around 1880–1970, further he is following new (archival, archeological and paleo-seismological) findings related to important historical and pre-historical Swiss earthquakes
