Luca's research focus is on understanding the relation between the temperature, pressure and deformation induced by human activities on the underground and their relation with the number and the size of the induced and triggered events. The occurence of seismic event with human activities is rare, but it can affect local population quality of life, with psychological and material impact.

Historically, the occurence of shaking and vibration associated with mining activities predates the existence of seismology as a science. Today, quantifying and mitigating the potential seismic risk associated with human activities is of uttermost importance in a variety of settings, ranging from fluid injection and production in the hydrocarbon industry to the mining of the rare earth metal necessary for the the renewable energies infrastructure.

To achieve this goal, he applies numerical tools to analyze historical cases of induced seismicity and to forecast the potential occurence of seismicity in future human activities.
