In 2006 the BAFU commissioned the development and construction of an earth quake simulator in cooperation with the cantonal building insurance Freiburg and the foundation for building dynamics and earth quake engineering.
Tens of thousands of people were able to increase their knowledge about earth quakes at these events, which were organised by cantons, regions, insurance companies, professional associations, universities, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Population and the foundation „science et cité“.
Depth 2.3m, Height 2.7m
||without load - maximum load 10 people|
||„skateboard wheels“ made from polyurethane|
||High voltage 380V||Power 20kW|
||Electrical ball bearing actuator||no hydraulics|
||± 12 cm horizontal longitudinal|
||0.5 g (50% of the earth’s gravitational acceleration|
This is equivalent to an earth quake of intensity VIII.
Note: Consider that the intensity of an earth quake describes the effect it had on the people and the damage it caused. Intensity can thus vary a lot according to circumstances when comparing quakes with similar movement or acceleration to each other.
Installation in focusTerra
With the renovation of the NO building and the planning of the earth science exhibition focusTerra space was created for the earth quake simulator.
For this the concrete floor of a room build directly on top of solid rock was fortified.
